This site has been to provide total hip replacement patients who have been implanted with the Zimmer Durom Cup information about the Zimmer Durom Hip Cup Implant and a forum to discuss their experiences with the issues surrounding the device.
Many of the patients implanted with the Zimmer Durom Cup have reported experiencing pain and discomfort long after the implant. Many of these patients have had a similar experience where they report the post implant pain to their surgeons for months or years but the surgeon does nothing and insists that the X rays indicate that the cup is in place and nothing is wrong.
The device is intended to bond to the patient’s hip socket as bone grows into the porous shell of the device. No screws, cement, or epoxy are used to affix the device. Later the patients seek care from some other orthopedic surgeon who performs a revision surgery due to the symptoms of loosening that the patient reports ( ie.. startup pain) and in spite of the x-ray not indicating any movement or loosening of the device. Upon revision the cup falls out and there is visibly no bony ingrowth into the porous shell of the device. The device has failed to bond properly (Note that the years in question for Zimmer Durom implants with possible problems are from 2006 to 2008)
The implants used in Europe do not seem to be having the same failure rate as the ones distributed in the US according to Zimmer. This may be due to a slightly different plasma coating being applied to a different thickness on the US cups.
It is our intent to follow this story, report on our findings and ultimately provide solutions. Let us know your story, maybe it will help another victim of the Durom Cup.

I understand that when this replacement part was brought over to the US another layer of material was added without FDA approval. Is this true?
